Tips for Closet Cleaning

Three cheers for a clean closet! It is so wonderful when you can look into your closet and know that everything you see is something that fits and you love and would want to wear. Your space is not overloaded and not crowded with old ratty shirts or too-small pants or shoes that don't fit or look cute any more.

But how on earth can you make the decision about what to throw out? How do you know which things you really want, or don't want, and which things are just the victim of a moment of "get rid of it all!" weakness?

Here is a quick and easy three-step process of Closet Cleaning Tips to help you determine which clothing items are safe to pack up and send to your local charity or thrift shop.

Closet Cleaning Tip #1

Sort clothing by seasons. Some people might live in an area where there is basically one season, but most people do have at least two seasons (hot and not-hot) and many people have all four seasons that really do merit several completely distinct sets of clothing. As you are sorting by season, toss out those items that you clearly know you no longer want or need. This first level of sorting will take care of most items right away. Just bag those up and send them on their way, easy as that! Then, pack up whatever is left into plastic bags or tubs, clearly labeled by season, and put them away in your attic or other storage room.

Closet Cleaning Tip #2

Sort clothing by "special occasions": These might include special outfits for Funerals, Job Interviews, Weddings, or other occasional and rare occasions, that do nonetheless merit a particular type of special outfit. Store these carefully in garment bags, and take note of the sizes, so that you can maintain your weight at a level that will allow these to continue to fit at a moment's notice. Be sure to choose classic styles for these occasional outfits.

Closet Cleaning Tip #3

Now, put the remaining clothing in your closet or drawer, sorting or organizing however you prefer. Proceed to wear a fresh outfit each day and go about your normal routine. Key Point - DO NOT DO LAUNDRY! Wear your regular clothes for as many outfits as possible. At some point, perhaps in one or two or three weeks, you will notice that you are finally ready to do laundry, instead of wearing anything else that is left in the closet or chest of drawers. That's the key important moment right there! Quickly take everything else that is still left in your closet and bag it up and remind yourself that in fact you must not really like it, or you'd be willing to wear it today, instead of going through the hassles of doing laundry!

Closet Cleaning Tips for Advanced Users

If there are a few items that you still can't bring yourself to part with, even though you don't want to wear them, then now is the time to sign up for a class in quilting, so you can learn to make something useful from these items. Clothing is just fabric, that's all, and you can use that fabric to make a quilt. This will allow you to still enjoy the memories associated with that particular fabric, without it cluttering up your closet. You can also use fabrics for scrapbooking or pillow covers or many other crafty projects.
