You can save a lot of money and time if you'll keep a Snack Jar in the car. If you transform a snack time into something quick and easy, you'll all be happier! This is the perfect solution for kids who are hungry immediately when you pick them after school. It also works great for when your errands go longer than expected or you end up stuck waiting for a train, or really anytime at all is a good time to have a little extra food available. Transform a snack time into something really helpful for your whole family in just a few steps and soon you will wonder how you ever managed without a snack jar in the car.
Step 1: Get a big plastic container. You can buy a large plastic jar with snacks already in it, or just use a big plastic food storage container you might already have in your cabinet. Two key requirements: big (to hold more food) and plastic (so it won't get broken). These jars usually come with pretzels, so serve those at your annual Carpool Buddies Back-To-School party.
Then, the jar will be empty:
Then, purchase new snacks for the jar. Best choices are individually wrapped items such as crackers, chips, cookies, cheese-and-crackers, popcorn, raisins, pretzels, nuts, and trail mix. In most areas, chocolate, candy, fruit roll-ups and gum are bad choices because they will transform a snack into a sticky mess.
Put the new snacks in the jar.
Be sure to close the lid. This helps the snacks stay fresh, and also keeps them getting loose in the car.
Remember to put the Snack Jar in the car that you will be using for carpool that day!
Caution: once your children are accustomed to having a Snack Jar, they will really count on it. They are likely to be frustrated, hungry and cranky if the jar is empty. Be sure to restock each week.
Handy tip: a trash can (or bag) is also a nice addition to your vehicle, as a companion to your Snack Jar.
